Topic: help my nipples please!

help!  the last 7 weeks have been amazing... Ivy has a great latch and nurses like a pro.  so why oh why do my nipples feel like someone has taken a belt sander to them today?!  she prefers my left nipple but i offer the right a few times a day and do most of my pumping on the right.  yesterday morning i noticed my right nipple was a bit sore after pumping, but thought it had to do with the pump position, i was distracted while pumping and it was not 100% centred.  it hurts so much i cannot pump, just hand express, and both sides when she latches it hurts for the first minute or so... the left not as bad, the right too much to feed her off of.

no new laundry soap, i did buy new leak pads the other day, but the same brand i normally use when not using reusables.  Ivy does tend to latch then try to look around, yanking my nipple with her but (pardon the tmi) i have a lot of leeway with my h cup boobies!  we both have the sniffles but very minor.

sorry this got long (and is typed one handed!) i have never had sore nipples with any of my nurslings before!

Re: help my nipples please!

This is my worst nightmare lol I even hate the feeling of my shirt rubbing against my nipples if I'm not wearing a bra. Yet I'm going to nurse the baby. So I'll be watching this thread (and adding lanolin to my online target order right now). I obviously have no advice but I hope you feel better soon! And idk if I've said it yet but both of your babies are absolutely gorgeous!

Re: help my nipples please!

Do you have access to a lactation consultant you can use?  I've heard that nursing shouldn't hurt like that - at least not after the first few weeks - and it's often due to something with the baby's latch.  An LC might be able to recommend a way to fix it.

Other than that, I would recommend the nipple shields I used with Justin because he had a poor latch.  It put a layer of plastic between him and me, and I never had sore nipples.  My two tubes of Lanisol cream went unused!  Target sells them in the breast pump section, but I found that they were often out or had odd sizes, so I bought them online from Target.com

Re: help my nipples please!

I second the nipple shield, you can use it for a few days to let your skin heal or for a few month to help with latch issues - either way they can be a life saver.  I always got them at BRU.  And I was that big when my milk came in too so I feel you!  I had huge breasts with tiny nipples, hence our latch issues and need for the shield.  Used it for 5 months mostly because I was too comfortable to try and do away with them earlier!

Re: help my nipples please!

I third the nipple shield!!  They were a god send for my nipples.  They will give you some relief from the skin on skin friction, they won't help with pumping.  Pumping I would recommend the Lanolin as well.

Re: help my nipples please!

I have this same problen from time to time. LC said it was probably due to the increase in the acidity of G's saliva (happens during teething) and that was irritating my nipples. I quadruple the nipple shield reccomendation. You can also try rinsing your nipples with water after every feeding to remove baby's saliva.

Re: help my nipples please!

oh yeah!!! I totally didn't think about that, but it happened BOTH times about a week or so before my period started. Stupid period!

Re: help my nipples please!

Oh Man I hope it is not my period!  Ivys mouth is all whte and gross now too, so we got some Gentian Violet yesterday... we're both purple for Christmas, but after 24 hours my nipples already feel a bit better (and my pumped milk is a lovely shade of lilac!).  Nothing like Thrush for the holidays!

A tip for anyone using the gentian violet... a little smear of vaseline around Ivys mouth and on her cheeks before she nurses REALLY helps the purple dye wipe off her face when she's done, though she still looks slightly like she's been in a blueberry pie eating contest, and my chest is alarmingly dark purple (and my belly, and my arms LOL!)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Re: help my nipples please!

I can't believe I didnt even mention the thrush!  We dealt with that forever and you are right that stuff gets everywhere!  We still have purple streaks on bedding that has never come out.  But what a life saver.  Since Kate was quite a bit older, she looked like the joker.  Glad you got some relief!

Re: help my nipples please!

We've been on the purple baby train lately too. Thrush hurts like heck!! Gentian violet is great, but I also use coconut oil in addition to it. It combats the yeast and provides a barrier to keep your baby's whole face from turning purple. I didn't use the shields because I've read that they can interfere with supply. I just toughed it out during nursing sessions, but I groaned and scrunched my face up the whole time. It was terrible. I did use breast shells. They keep your clothes off of your boobs while your not nursing. I highly recommend them! Coat the puppies with gentian violet and put on the shells. They also keep the purple off of your bra/clothes. Just a heads up, all the info I read suggested that the pain would end quickly. It didn't. The yeast resolved in a few days, but I still have a dull pain a couple weeks later. I think the breast tissue gets bruised or something. Good luck with your treatment and take plenty of purple-faced pics! smile

Re: help my nipples please!

Awww, glad I'm not the only one with a purple baby!

one more question though... how often/long should I be dying us purple?  I totally forgot to ask and don't want to bother the MW over the holidays or go up to the hospital to ask.

Re: help my nipples please!

I want to say I did it twice a day when it was really bad?  I just hated the mess so more probably would have been better.  If you can folow some of teh suggestions for minimizing the mess maybe that will help.

Re: help my nipples please!

I used it twice a day for 4-5 days. I guess it depends on how long you and Ivy have symptoms.

Re: help my nipples please!

Thank you!  I hope it will be better soon, of course this is right when we have a ton of places to go, people to see and family coming into town, so walking around topless (or even braless) is not an option, since the girls feel SO much better with nothing on them.  And it takes a few minutes longer, but the mess is not as bad if I feed her THEN paint us both, since Ivy is very much a talker while she nurses... 3 minutes of getting down to business and then she'll pop off to smile, coo and then suck for a bit longer, smile, coo, repeat until she's done... and every time she smiles she drips purple milk down my side!

Re: help my nipples please!

i dont suggest a nipple shield, depending on your baby's age she might start to prefer it because it's less work for her or she might just like the plastic feel and then she might not ever go back to bare nipple. this happened to me and it made nursing rather hard. it took all the joys of how easy nursing is away.  the reason it can effect your supply is her saliva simulates your breast to produce.
