Topic: 18 mos and a toddler bed

So we are picking up a toddler bed first thing in the morning since Emerson hopped out of her crib this evening. I am concerned that nap time and bed time are about to change for us in a big way. Anyone have toddlers this young that had to transition out of the crib this early? Any advice?

Jack would probably still be in crib if we didn't buy a drop side that broke....he never even tried to get out. He loved his crib and when we took the side off it was no big deal at 2.5 years old.

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

We converted Olivia's crib to a toddler bed at 15 months due to the fact that she HATED her crib and we had very little success getting her to regularly sleep for long stretches in it.  We then purchased a twin mattress for her at 18 months because at the time we transitioned her I was still breastfeeding and having the twin bed made this easier for me to lay with her. We really didn't have too much trouble with her getting out of the toddler bed or the twin bed. Even now at 22 months when she wakes in her room she will just sit up in her bed and start talking or crying ( depending on the mood/situation).  We do have an installed baby gate at her door to keep her from wandering just in case though.  While we definitely have had a few tough nights here or there overall she has done very well in both the toddler and twin bed.  I will say that we are also comfortable with co-sleeping and when needed one of us will sleep next to her in her bed or she will sleep in ours when sick or just needs to. smile

Advice, just go for it!  We did try to make a big deal out of her new space and toddler bed when we set it up.  We hung out there for a bit during the day, read stories, talked about sleeping in there, and put a special snuggle toy or something in there.  When the first night came we went up to her room and once there reminded her about her new bed and did our usual bedtime routine.  Oh, and I did put pillows on the floor to break her fall.  In the toddler bed we had two falls. One of which she didn't even wake up!  In her twin bed she has also fallen/rolled out twice and also went through a short phase where she was getting out of the bed and sleeping on the pillows or rug on her floor smile  Again, it really has been a good thing for us and not as nerve-wracking as we anticipated.

Good luck!

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

I tried transitioning Maggie around the same age - and it sucked.  But she is also a kid who co-sleeps most of the time.  I put the crib back up and she slept in it half the time from 27 months to 33 months.  We just took it down and put her toddler bed back up.  Now she falls asleep in my bed and I move her to her bed.  She is sleeping for longer stretches in her bed, but we both sleep better when she is in my bed.

We switched E at 22 months because she climbed out. She loved it. We did the crib mattress on the floor for about six weeks before we moved. Going to sleep was more difficult, but she did fine sleeping in the bed.
Now (28mos) she has a big bed and climbs out and comes to our room if she needs us.

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

The twins were converted at 18 months and did really well. I did it for the same reasons, S was actually climbing out of his crib and into K's crib. I never had any trouble with the transition.

M...well he has never been in a crib...I'm still working on getting him out of my bed...sigh

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

Well we put her toddler bed together, and when she fell asleep in the car I transitioned her to her new bed. She seemed kind of excited about it when we were putting it together.

Jack always spooks me when he is standing at my bedside at crazy morning hours whispering momma! Jack is usually in our bed a couple of mornings a week. I'm expecting Emerson to be joining us soon.

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

Hahaha, I'm laughing about Jack standing beside your bed.  We've been having this discussion because Holden fell out of his crib once about two months ago, but he hasn't done it since and sleeps relatively well.  We do have a gate on his bedroom door that is for playing purposes right now but will use it nightly once he is transitioned.  His crib turns into a toddler bed, so it's only a matter of when for us now.  Keep us posted! smile

Aww, your story about Jack reminded me of a friend of mine. She said whenever her 12yo son comes to her room in the middle of the night she's sleepy and for just a moment believes he's two again. She said she's always surprised to see that he's a tall nearly teenager instead.

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

Paige climbed out of her crib at 7 months. We had hardwood floors so I got her a toddler bed. When she awoke naps/morning she would sit in her bed and cry. It was like she didn't realize she could get out. She did that for awhile. We were in for it when she did figure it out though. Beckham has always co slept!  Good luck!!!!

Re: 18 mos and a toddler bed

This was NOT working for us! Last  night I slept in a sleeping bag on the floor in Em's room, and she refused to stay in her bed and ended up on the floor with me. After reading many blogs about Houdini babies I decided to try one of their ideas this morning before I left for work. I re-assembled the crib and left out the bottom portion/metal spring part. I put the mattress in it and "wa laaa" it is taller and and we are back in the crib. We just weren't ready for free reign of the house and no containment options. She was wandering the living room last night and we have no idea how long she was hanging out in there. We can't lock or close doors really because we have a cat who [loudly] protests when she can't wander the house freely at night. A catch 22. So, crossing our fingers that the new configuration works out better for us...at the very least she will not be getting out the front door (I imagine our house alarm going off and giving us all a heart attack).

ANOTHER UPDATE! It turns out that a nasty ear infection was the culprit and not the toddler bed.....hoping the that some antibiotics clears it up quickly....poor thing, we didn't catch it early since we thought the fuss was over the bed!
