Topic: SMBC and need some help

I went to follow up OB/GYN appt today because last month she thought they could help me so I wouldn't have to do this at home by myself.  I went to the appt today and they no longer will be able to do it. I am noticing that most people are going to RE and I don't think I am wanting to go through all that.  I am worried that it will be a hard process to do by myself. Anyone out there with any advice?

Re: SMBC and need some help

I think it depends on the RE. The process at mine was super easy!! Go in for a consult. They'll walk through it all with you. I ended up doing some genetic testing and learned a lot about myself!!

It doesn't hurt to go in for a consult.

Re: SMBC and need some help

I'm a fellow SMBC too! I just went to an RE for the first time yesterday. I've tried home insemination before (fresh sperm, and frozen doing an IUI). Did you want to do a home IUI or just place the sperm in the vagina?

Re: SMBC and need some help

I did it at home by myself it took me 3 tries - I think my first two tries were bad timing.  Third time was the one.

I got pregnant a second time but miscarried - that time I had a midwife do my insemination.

It is entirely possible to do it on your own - mirror, speculum, good lighting and an insemination kit from NW.

Re: SMBC and need some help

From what I am reading on here it may be the easiest to do IVI by yourself.

Re: SMBC and need some help

Yes, using ICI sperm vaginally is def the easiest. I tried home IUI last month with a helper. Even though I know exactly what to do, I'm not sure I could do the IUI myself. This month I wouldn't have a helper bc she's on vacay, so I'm going to use the ICI in a Softcup.

Re: SMBC and need some help

Yes, it is absolutely, without a doubt, possible to do it by yourself at home. I did.
What happened to me is I started with a RE, I went 3 times for IUI, wasted so much money, but the RE was trying to convince me that doing it on my own will not work. Well, the RE was sooooooo wrong, lol.
I switched the bank, picked the new donor, did  ICI insemination by myself at home using just the syringe, no catheter, no mirrors, no extra equipment, no soft cup, no speculum.  Just the syringe and sperm, that's all. First time doing it at home resulted in my daughter, I still can't believe it, but it did!  smile
Good luck!  smile

Re: SMBC and need some help

I got pregnant in the second try both times (one early m/c and then my son... 4 cycles total) and I did home IVI using 3 vials a cycle smile

it was actually very easy to do at home, and I'd imagine more relaxing than a doctors office. I was able to lay in bed after and watch "friends" or whatever LOL I didn't have to pack up and drive home.

Re: SMBC and need some help

It sounds much scarier then it is.  I'm now expecting my second child :-) and really I learned a lot and for me I just didn't stress on certain things with TTC baby 2. There was some things but the actually AI was simple. Hardest part was my 2-year knocking and yelling at the door the whole time. So I rushed it and it still worked

Re: SMBC and need some help

The solution that worked for my life was to try on my own first.  My plan was to contact an RE after 6 unsuccessful tries.  My only regret is that I didn't contact the RE sooner.  His wait list is 3 months long.  As a result I met with him after 9 tries instead of my planned 6.

Do what works for you.  It's your life and you know best.

Re: SMBC and need some help

Bummer, my OBGYN said the same rhing.

But I say give yourself a number-- the times you'll try at home before going to the doctor. Anywhere from 6 months is normal for even a couple that are perfectly healthy. But you also have to keep in mind that you are working with far less sperm or "specimen" than they are...

I could do DIY at home 4 times. And it turns out, going to the doctor unearthed the fact that I have PCOS tendencies so i immediately went on to meds. So, naturally, I wish I would have gone sooner. But I think you should just go with your gut.

Re: SMBC and need some help

Another SMBC here who got pregnant at home twice. It's so much easier than you think. If you don't have any reason to think you will have problems conceiving at home, I would go that route for 3-6 cycles before seeing a RE.
