Topic: Alva diaper insert question

I finally got my bamboo inserts which I was going to pair with the microfiber inserts for my Alva Baby diapers.

It's pretty bulky now! Is this normal for cloth diapers to get this bulky as they get bigger and pee more? Also, should I put the micofiber on the inside (closest to her bottom) or the bamboo?

Thanks!!! I think it will be a transition in my thinking to switch back to cloth! For one thing, she is going be able to start wearing more of her 18 month pants, lol!

Re: Alva diaper insert question

Yep, 2 inserts in there is pretty bulky.  We do one MF and one bamboo in Tiny's diapers, and she's got a pretty bulky tush, but it does the job instead of constant leaking.  I don't think it matters too much which is on top and which is on bottom as long as they are in the pocket, or at least I have never paid much attention to how I am stuffing and if one way works better then other or not!

Re: Alva diaper insert question

Thanks for asking this!  I have started my diaper stash and just got 6 Alvas with MF inserts.  I was wondering if I could get hemp inserts from another brand and put them in with the Alva inserts.

As long as they fit, theres no reason you can't use different inserts!  I stick to alvas because they are a good price!

Re: Alva diaper insert question

Thanks Goobie! Sounds good and yes, they are working much better! Seems I may need to change her a little more frequently than with cloth, but I hear that is totally more normal (ideally, the disposable gets changed more often too, but you know when you are out or time gets away from you it happens!)

Couple other thoughts, when I started looking into more inserts, it was for two reasons, leaking poop out the leg whole and leaking pee pretty quickly. I will say that she also leaked poo with disposables and it was something she kinda outgrew some how. Therefore, I still needed these new inserts for pee and like I said, it seems to do the job.

Unfortunately, the main daycare teacher got used to the disposables and seemed disappointed that I brought back the cloth, lol! So, I said, lets compromise and I will drop her off in a cloth and you can use disposables after that, then just put her back in a cloth diaper for her last change (sometimes I will arrive earlier and she will have on a disposable). That felt appropriate. I don't want to inconvenience the teachers. I also want to save diapers from going to the landfill and I don't want to completely get out of the habit of using cloth. I have a beautiful stash thanks to AlvaBaby and the ladies like Goobie that told me about them!

Scorpio, let me know if you find other thinner inserts that work great for toddlers. I'll probably stick with what I have but, it will be nice to know!

That's really too bad.  Are you not paying her to watch your child?  Because if you are, then she can use whatever diaper you want her to!  Flushable liners to make the poop easier to deal with (I buy Kushies at WalMart, but just ordered some of the Alva ones from their site since they're half the price) and a wet bag, and how is it more difficult or involved for her to deal with then disposables?  Remove wet diaper, stuff it in the wetbag, put dry diaper on babe, send wetbag home with mom.

Sorry, no one slept last night in my house so I am cranky, but this is a pet peeve of mine, my sister is the same way "cloth is so hard, don't you have any REAL diapers for when I watch Tiny?" and I always wonder how it is so hard for the person who simply has to change it, provided you're not asking your daycare provider to wash for you!

(PS, I am a childcare provider, and prefer my clients using cloth, that way their disposables are not in my trash!)

Re: Alva diaper insert question

Haha! Do not apologize! I may have given in a little bit too quickly. She leaked through one of the cloth diapers during nap time, so I made the suggestion to use disposable in the middle of the day. I know she would use them all day if I requested because I'm allowed, by the daycare, to use cloth. I think I may have gotten nervous because I just went back to them. Once I get used to them again, I can suggest she use them more frequently.
