Topic: Best age for newborn photos?

Having photos of the baby done soon. She is cute but has that very just born look (going on 16 hours old). I have the choice of doing them Sunday at 3-days old or the 28th so 9-days-old. I'm spending a lot on these so hope to make the most of it. A big splurge for me! This may be a pointless question/post but I can't fully remember the first few weeks. After a day or so they lose the puffy-just born look but I know at some point they can get the newborn pimples if I can remember right or just newborn stuff. I just can't remember really when & what happens or if even doing it at 3 or 9 days makes much difference. I'm feeling fine so assume by Sunday I could handle it. Anyways just wanted input since this is quite expensive, also a family photo shoot & I've never done newborn photos. She said as long as its in the first 10-days the baby will still be sleepy which is what we want.

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

The few children I adopted straight from the hospital I paid to have the photographer that came to the hospital to do newborns take their photos...they don't look anything like them...but I couldn't resist and it was fun having the photos of hours old babies..

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

If you schedule for three days and she isn't up to her best, could you reschedule for nine days?  What if she's jaundiced or your still in the hospital or something?

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

Our photographer who did both kids prefers to do the pictures before 11 days old.   We did O's at 9 days and E's at 8 days.

Congratulations on your baby girl's arrival!

Congrats on her arrival! Can't wait to see her photos smile

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

I have a photographer friend who specializes in newborn photos.  She says you HAVE to do them before 14 days but preferably before 10 days because baby's stop cooperating for the newborn poses after then.  Her preference is between 5-10 days, but as close to the 5 days as possible.  She did my sons at 10 days and he was already not cooperating super well, but when I had my other photographer fiend take his pics at 4 days he did perfect.  I would probably aim for the three days if I were you.  But I'll ask my friend what she thinks!

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

I worked for a very large photography studio in my city for 11 years doing all the retouching and dark room developing and we always had the babies brought in for shoots between 5 and 7 days old for first session and then again at 1 month, then 3 months, 6 months, 1year,2years........ The

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

Actually she said 9 days should be just fine.  She said 3 days is a terrible idea because your milk won't be in yet so baby probably won't be sleeping as well. :-)

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

Thanks guys. I think I'll go for 9 days. I felt Sunday would be a bit soon to even deal with but do able. By 9-days we'll be more settled & such. With her cost & how important the concept of the photos are to me I want to try & make the most of it.

I've always heard the 6-10 day time frame is best, too. The baby should be sleepy, but won't be as red/splotchy as she was at birth.

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

I did 12 hours old and then again at 2 weeks. But I wasn't in any way going for the typical posed newborn pics so probably not relevant. I'd suggest getting nursing photos when you stop to feed her if you have any interest in that. Those are some of my all time favorites.

Does baby girl have a name yet????

Re: Best age for newborn photos?

I am a newborn photographer and the first 2 weeks are the best to get it done. Most newborn photographers prefer around the first week, like around 7 days. So 9 days is perfect. I've had a session with a 2 day old newborn before. Parents came from the hospital. He was a dream. I did my son's at 5 days old after my c-section since he was almost a 9 pound baby. Expect to be breast feeding her a lot there. Do you give her a paci? Depending on the photographer you choose, they can fix the jaundice look if you want it fixed and they can edit out blotches and acne.
