Topic: Non Dairy Ideas

I have a disabled 14 yr old daughter. She was one of those 1 lb babies who miraculously survived but in Heaven's case she is multidisabled.  One of Heaven's problems is that she can not chew and swallow solids...All her food even at 14 yrs old has to be liquids or semi-liquids but she has grown and is healthy. She is having some digestive problems right now and I blame it on the high dairy in her diet and I am going to try a month of no dairy....I started her today on almond and soy milk...she is just fine with her added strawberry flavored powder...I found some fruit sauces. The baby food section of course gave us some things but at 14 she eats a lot and it is going to be pricey....anyone have any ideas on big people food that may have the right consistency or ideas on how to save a few precious bucks on her food?

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

Try Pinterest. Just search dairy free or non dairy and see what they come up with. What does she generally eat/like prior to the change?

What was her diet like before?  Half my family is dairy free, you can make most everything dairy free, and I'd be happy to share recipes and idea with you!

Need to update a ticker, Silas Anthony Jordon born Oct 11, 2013.  6th baby, so much love!

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

Try searching diets for people with a broken jaw.  DP had to have hers wired shut for 3 months and we had to get creative.  They have more adult like diets and special diets, but all are liquid, or pretty close to it.  You can put just about anything in a blender!

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

I'm vegan and use a dairy free protien powder called warrior force and make smoothies out of fruit, soy or nut milk, soy yogurt for breakfast.  This has saved me during pregnancy.  Mashed squash combined with non dairy milk.... lots of options for mixing foods and making puree soups.  I have a vitamix and it really makes a difference.  It comes with easy recipe s.

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

I make a mix of baby oatmeal, applesause and soy protein powder that she has twice a day...she still can have that. But she had yogurt and puddings which she can not have now and some baby food. Everything has to be cold or room temp and super smooth. No sugars or salts...very bland...or she won't eat it. I am going to see if I can get a better blender that could get things finer and I thought about trying canned veggies and fruits. She is super particular so I think we will just have to experiment with her. We have made it one day. I am soooo glad she liked the soy and almond milk as strawberry milk is literally the ONLY thing she will drink...no juice or water or anything else. I had a foster daughter for a couple years that had to have a feeding tube and I was/am determined to keep Heaven from having to have one. I know she has been eating well...even if undersized...because she developed sexually, started her period and has hair that reaches below her behind all signs drs. have told me that show she is getting enough of what she needs so I do get a little concerned about changing things. Thank you all for your ideas...

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

There are lots of great dairy free yogurts available.  Whole Foods makes an awesome vegan pudding you could probably google the recipe. I'd be careful with offering too much soy also. Keep us posted if it helps her!

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

Coconut milk is good if you make her any sort of smoothie or if you make your own pudding.  I don't like to drink it because it is thick but making things with it is good.  Also some of the coconut milk yogurts are good.  You can make your own jello as a treat with gelatin, your juice of choice and sugar (if needed depending on what juice you use).  Did you ever try Pastina for her?  The teeny tiny itty bitty star pasta for babies....you could puree veggies and mix them in or just make it with vegan butter.

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

I was going to suggest the So Delicious brands of yogurts and ice creams.  Most of them are coconut milk based or soy milk based.  I think they are all dairy free.

Re: Non Dairy Ideas

Great ideas. I am going to have to get to a bigger city and grocery store to see if I can get these things. I was hoping there was a non dairy yogurt out there as she loves yogurt. Shanny good idea on not over doing the soy. She likes the almond milk so we will stick with that too to cut down on the soy a bit so we can try some soy foods. I knew if I put this out here I could get some good ideas...I was stuck.
