Topic: Cloth diapers...again

I know this is asked all the time. I've read other threads and I'm still confused. How many cloth diapers do you need? And what is a good price per diaper? Thanks!

Re: Cloth diapers...again

It depends on how often you plan to do laundry.   I think 24-30 is a good number.  Assuming you'll go through 8-10 diapers a day, if you have 30 you can do laundry every other day and still have some extras in case of emergency (power goes out, dryer breaks down, etc).

Re: Cloth diapers...again

Disclaimer:  I was not a "successful" CD mommy.  I wanted to be, but my son's allergies had other plans.  However, I did accrue a nice stash.

How many CD you need is completely subjective.  It depends on what kind you want to use and how often you want to wash.  If you're going to wash every day using prefolds and covers, you could probably get away with 15-20 prefolds and 2 covers (in each size).  You could probably get up and running in nb/small size for $50-$65 if you shop around and look for deals.  If you want to wash every other day, i'd double the amount of diapers and covers, then add the cost of some sort of diaper pail/wet bag system.

Fitteds and covers are going to be more expensive start up, probably close to $8-10 a diaper on a good day.  Probably 2-3 covers would be ok.  You'd need to have around the same # as prefolds.

If you're going to wash every day and want to use AIO, your price is going to greatly increase, but you get ease of use.  AIO and one size diapers range in price from $15-25 (possibly more if you like pretty designs and organic fibers).  You're going to STILL need 15-20 diapers, but if you get one size AIO then you should be all set after baby gets to the minimum weight.  Again, if you want to wash less often, you're gonna need a larger stash.

I'm sure others can help you out with their specific experiences and choices and exact costs.  I chose green mountain diapers workhorse fitteds.  I bought 12 nb, 20 small, 12 medium, 10 large, 4 bummies super whisper wrap, 2 thirsty duo wrap in the smaller size, and 2 in the larger size, 2 snappis, and a handful of hemp doublers.  I spent around $500, but I bought everything new.

Re: Cloth diapers...again

Ok thanks! How do I decide if I want pocket or fitted?

Re: Cloth diapers...again

I'd just research, read reviews, and really think about how much of a washing commitment you wanna make.  Fitteds seemed the most trim and were all cotton (at least the ones I bought).  That was what was important to me.

Re: Cloth diapers...again

I ordered a few. Alva and kawaii! So excited smile thanks for the input ladies

Re: Cloth diapers...again

Seconding what TXmoms said. 100% cotton was important to us too. But different things are important to different people, so I second what she said about reading reviews  & all of that.

Have you thought about using cloth wipes too? So, so many nasty chemicals in those disposable wipes on the market, and they can really irritate baby's delicate skin. W started getting a diaper rash in his first week of life which was when we were using up the diapering supplies that the hospital sent home, it was from the wipes. And they were "sensitive" wipes (can't remember if they were Pampers or Huggies). Gross. We switched him to our normal spray bottle of water & cloth wipes and his skin irritation cleared right up. 24-36 wipes cover both of the kids, although we do laundry daily, so that's probably how many you'd need for 1 if you were washing every other day.

As far as how many diapers you need, it also depends on your kid. R went through the typical 8-10 diapers in a day but W easily goes through twice that many! This kid pees a little bit at least every hour. Sometimes I think I change his diaper 3 times in just one hour. And he gets SO UPSET when he's wet - not that I blame him, I wouldn't want to hang around in a wet diaper either. He's been like this for as long as I remember, he's coming up on 6 months old and still the same with frequent wetting.

Re: Cloth diapers...again

I'm planning on making cloth wipes! Just figuring out how to keep them wet/ what to use still. I'd like to order around 30 more diapers throughout my pregnancy after the ones I just ordered come in to see what I like best. I'd like to thank all of you for your suggestions and input. It's what truly made me think about doing cloth!

Re: Cloth diapers...again

In the early days I would change him about 15-20 times per day. We had about 30 cloth diapers that fit him at that stage, and unless I did laundry daily (which I tried to do) I ran out quickly.  Now I am only using gDiapers and could easily get by with about 6 gPants. Most days I use 2. I usually have to change the plastic cover a few times, and probably go through 6-10 cloth inserts. I have 25 cloth inserts, 20 extra plastic pants, and keep the disposable inserts on hand just in case.

Re: Cloth diapers...again

Wow that's a lot of diaper changes! It's very interesting to me how many brands and styles they are and that most people have different preferences. Where do you guys buy yours?

Re: Cloth diapers...again

I love my pockets for both kids in diapers, the OS makes it easy because I only need one kind of diaper for both of them.  I mostly use Alva, and have recently started selling Hip Huggers brand diapers, which are FAR superior... and I'm not just saying that because I sell them!  I only have 3 of my own (till next week) and can't wait to wash and re-use them.

I currently have 36 diapers on the go for 2 in diapers, and I wash daily but have enough to only wash every other day.  I hardly get on here anymore, but if you are interested in seeing the ones I sell, send me an email.

Re: Cloth diapers...again

I'm a cloth diapering junkie. I have about 125 my last count. I do have enough to comfortably go 3 days without having to wash. I'd have to say the 30/35 is a decent amount. If your on Facebook, there are oodles of buy sell trade pages so you can figure out which ones work for you. My majority are rumparooz then kawaii and a few Alva (not a fan of them but the price is decent)
