Topic: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

I was reading a book recently on preventing miscarriage and it says that taking progesterone cream and rubbing it on your inner thighs can help to prevent miscarriage and encourage implantation when taken after ovulation. Does anyone have any experiences with progesterone preventing a miscarriage or helping at all to conceive?

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

If you have issues with low progesterone then of course supplementing could help prevent miscarriage, but I hadn't heard that simply taking it was recommended to decrease chances of a m/c.
I had two miscarriages before we conceived our son, but I did not have issues with low progesterone. Something simply went wrong during implantation or the early developmental stages of those pregnancies. Of course I did eventually conceive and carry our son to term. And this time when TTC#2 I did not have any issues and we conceived within two cycles.

Glad to see you two back and getting ready to try again...try to stay positive, I know its so tough when you've faced a loss before, but it is best to be as stress free as possible for that little one you'll soon be growing! :-)

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

My RE also said cream won't do anything.  If you have low progesterone you need to get a prescription for progesterone suppositories or the progesterone in oil shots.  My RE also said taking it orally does not do much.  Good luck.

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

Ditto what PP's have said...

Progesterone (prescription strength) will only help prevent miscarriage if you have a low progesterone problem.  It will absolutely not prevent impending miscarriage due to any other reason.  Unfortunately, most miscarriages are not preventable.

For me, as others have also said, my Dr. simply prescribes the progesterone for the first 13 weeks as a preventative measure, to ensure that he did everything possible to ensure pregnancy success.  He also said there is no proof that progesterone actually helps unless you actually have low progesterone, but he refused to take any chances.

Also, keep in mind that progesterone (sometimes even creams) used during the tww can simply delay your AF, causing false hope, extra symptoms, and timing issues... something to consider.

After 9 yrs & 1 devastating loss, we got our BFP at 9DPO ~ and welcomed our beautiful son on Halloween! Best treat ever!!

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

Again I agree that progesterone is only going to prevent a miscarriage if your progesterone levels are low. But the progesterone cream won't help. DP didn't have a low progesterone issue but our RE prescribed it anyways as a preventative measure. DP look it until she was 13 weeks pregnant with our daughter.

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

I did have low progesterone prior to getting my BFP.  The first cycle I used the progesterone suppositories, I got a BFP and have had a healthy pregnancy.  In my case, progesterone absolutely did prevent me from having a miscarriage but like I said I was having a progesterone issue.  Has your dr run any tests to see what the levels are?

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

The only reason I ask is because I know that with our BFP that lead to a miscarriage DP had very few symptoms of pregnancy and absolutely no sickness whatsoever which I have heard can be an indicator of low progesterone, BUT DPs doctor never ran any blood tests to see if she had low progesterone, which I am sure they will do if we get a BFP in the future now that she has had a history of miscarriage. There are so many old wives tales out there that I'm just trying to see what really is true and what really isn't. I may ask the doctor about progesterone prescription though when and if we wind up in the position again.

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

I was using progesterone cream twice a day, rubbing it on my stomach and still had a miscarriage. While I was bleeding I upped it even higher to three times a day, hoping it would help, but it sadly didn't.  I think the cream helped delay the miscarriage, but I honestly think the pregnancy wasn't doing well to begin with since I had such a late BFP (17DPO). I lost the baby at 7 weeks.  I don't plan to use it for my next cycle. Next cycle I'm going completely natural.

I think it may work to help prevent miscarriage if the pregnancy is healthy and the baby is doing well. But, I think if the baby is having problems from the beginning like chromosonal abnormalities than it will probably only delay the inevitable.

I was on progesterone shots till 13 weeks and I didn't have a lot of pregnancy symptoms, really only fatigue.
While lack of symptoms may be an indicator it might not be either.

One month I tried the cream and had tons of symptoms and AF was late but it was a bfn so it was more of false hope for me.

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

I agree with the others.  It will only work if you have low levels. It wont work if you have like genetic or the donor has certain type of genetic problems etc.  I wish yall the best of luck..

Re: Does progesterone cream prevent miscarriage?

I used it during both pregnancies because I was older and I started out with a fertility specialist.  I took 200 mg 2x a day orally of prometrium for the first 13 weeks of both pregnancies (actually, I started out with 400 mg by accident because my fertility specialist wrote it down wrong on the Rx).  They recommended it for older ladies who tend to have more progesterone issues early in the pregnancy.  My levels were never checked, though.
