Topic: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Seriously, is there some magic phrase that works?  I'm tired of rationalizing with Justin that there's a place for this kind of stuff (bathroom or bedroom, and please wash your hands when you're done) and watching him have his hands down his pants 12 hours of the day.  Now I know why some parents resort to, "It'll fall off if you keep doing that," just to get the hands out.  Anyone have luck with this who could offer some advice?  My dad's response was that it's only going to get worse, and just wait until he's a teenager.   roll

Ha!  Mine's not quite 10 months and he's already doing it.  I'll be watching this thread to get some ideas for future use!   smile

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Silly question, I'm sure, but is it because he likes it? Does it itch? It seems easy to think that he's doing it because he likes it, and maybe he is, but I notice that when E has foods with corn in them (she has an intolerance) her hands are down her pants more. It starts, I think, because she's itchy, but then I'm sure there is also an aspect of liking it as well.  It's not often a problem, but we have  put clothes on her that make it impossible if we're going to be out and about.  If we're at home and it's clearly bothering her we'll go and have her take a bath and wash herself to help take the itch away.  Usually it helps and after the bath she stops.

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

You are not alone with this problem  M did it so much one day at daycare that one of the girls told her daddy "no touch penis" when he picked her up that night. wink

Right now he is doing it in an "uncomfortable" way.  Most of the time he just likes it.M is still small enough to put a onesie on.  When he doesn't keep his hands out of his pants, we change him into a onesie.  It comes and goes in phases for us.  We have also taught him that when we say hands he raises his hands up in the air and then we quick distract him so his hands don't go back.  I am sure we are going to keep dealing with this for a while.  Good luck

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

I'm sure this is coming for us, but hasn't yet.  He just points to it and says, "Dat my pet-is". Every once in a while in the bath, he'll grab it like he's never seen it before, but other than that pretty much leaves it alone for now.

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

We haven't had the pleasure yet, either, but he usually has a onesie on underneath his clothes. He also likes to label -- "penis down here" and my favorite, "bum back there". I have no advice but wish you luck!

Coveralls/ overalls, what ever you want to call them.

I had a psych pt who we had to keep in overalls for that reason smile

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Jax does that now during his diaper change. I just let him do it only because I don't want him to think what he's doing is wrong. People have already forewarned how its going to get.

With this kind of thing, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do because the more you draw attention to it, the worse it gets.  You don't want to make it something taboo.  In public I would quietly remind him that's private and not appropriate in public, but just don't make it some big issue.  It's tough!

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Yeah, in our experience with our now four sons, I kind of have to agree with your father. Although, the teenager cares more about privacy so he actually does it the least. It kind of peaked at kindergarten for all of them, then they were more rational and we could at least try to explain "private parts, private places." They still walk around the house with their hand in their pants and yank at themselves when they're relaxed. So do a lot of grown men I know!

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Both my boys have this issue. With S, who is seven, he's reminded that he needs to stop, or go to his room. It's not something that's punished or looked negatively upon, just not something we do in the middle of the living room. With M, who is three, I ignore. Any time I mention it, it just brings attention to it and he does it more because he thinks it funny.

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Hahaha, I have 2 teenaged boys!  What worked for us was the rationalization "that is a private activity, if you want to touch your penis you need to do it in the bathroom" as we led them there.  or bedroom.  You can be flexible that way, you do need to be consistant in removing them from the room they are in.  Ok, you don't NEED to be, thats just what worked best for me.  Once that was a given, that if you wanted to touch your penis you needed to go to the bathroom or your room, then I would be able to simply say "hands" or "do you need private time?".

It does get better before it gets worse though, I swear!  And at least my boys are 14 and 18 and they dpn't play with their penis' in front of me anymore... eventually they get that its a private thing smile

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

I'm tempted to ask his daycare if he's doing this there, because they haven't said a thing about it.  Sometimes I think he's doing it because he knows it's getting a reaction from me.  He's added a new twist of pulling the front of his pants down just enough to expose himself, and during bathtime or clothing changes he's sticking his butt up in the air to see if anyone laughs.  We're also going through the "I have to pass gas so I'm going to sit on you and then do it" phase as well.  And last night he made a big to-do over getting in the tub with his sister and then announcing he'd peed in the tub.  It seems to have taken an attention-seeking turn.

Re: How do you get your little boys to keep their hands out of their pants

Both of my boys are doing this now! Hands always in pants and pulling down the front of their pants then turning to look at me until I notice it.
