Topic: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I am aware that actual breast milk doesn't actually come in until after delivery. I have heard that women can sometimes leak colostrum during pregnancy and I am curious to know if this has  happened to anyone.  If so, how far along were you? Also for the moms who have been pregnant more than once, was there any difference as far as in the timing of its occurrence?

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I never really noticed it with Riley & so far nothing with this baby at 23 weeks.

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I was about 7 months when I started leaking. My Dr. and LC both said that leaking/producing before birth has absolutely no bearing on whether or not you will be able to bf successfully. It simply happens differently for different people.

After 9 yrs & 1 devastating loss, we got our BFP at 9DPO ~ and welcomed our beautiful son on Halloween! Best treat ever!!

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

About 16-18 weeks with my first pregnancy, but it was twins. Around the same time with my second pregnancy. I have read many times that leaking during pregnancy isn't an indicator of production once baby is here.

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I know I leaked with Boog a bit, but can't remember when... 7ish months or so?  Earlier with Moosie, 18 weeks I had colostrum leaking with Tiny, and since I never weaned her I've had milk through my whole pregnancy this time, though it switched from real milk back to colostrum about 16 weeks... or I'm assuming since that's when Tiny told me "Milkies is GROSS" big_smile

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I never really noticed leaking, but I would get a little bit of crusty something on my nipples which had to have been a limitless bit of it. After birth it took a little effort to get the supply going but my milk came in on day three and was going strong by day four. I wouldn't worry at all if you don't see any.

Uh, did I totally miss that you had your baby JayJay?!?

And since I wrote that, nothing useful to say on this topic except, I've got nothing for ya at 29 weeks.  No leaks, no drops, nada.  I will say I had a bit if tenderness today .... Maybe something's ramping up in there?

I'm going to take this moment to get on my breastfeeding councillor/lactation consultant in training soapbox and remind people that if you leak, or not, if you can express, or not, if you leak in one pregnancy, and don't in the next, NONE of this is relevant as to whether you will be successful in breastfeeding!  Feeling letdowns while still pregnant, heavy, warm feeling breasts, tingling, dripping, crusties of colostrum on your bra at the end of the day, or nothing at all, none if it is a pre-indicator.  If you are wanting to breastfeed, meet up with a breastfeeding councillor or lactation consultant, check our Le Leche Leagues website, look up kellymom.com, talk to other Mommas who have breastfed, educate yourself, arrange a support circle for yourself and get comfortable with your own boobies.  But do not stress about if you will make enough milk or not, there is no indication of that until it comes in after birth.

So far it's nada for me. Not worried though, just curious about what others have experienced.

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

This is my first pregnancy that made it very far and my partner told me I had 'something sweet' coming out of my breast one night. I have since expressed a little here and there. But I don't seem to be leaking. I was just over 20wks when it started.

Haha yeah I guess I haven't said anything but he was born on Thursday and he is perfect! We had a very scary and traumatic birth so I have been focusing on recovering but I will write down my crazy birth story soon!

I didn't notice anything until the kids were born.

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I forget when in my pregnancy that I saw the smallest little teeny tiny droplet of colostrum, but I was very excited about it! I told everyone I could about it! LOL! It was maybe towards the end of the second trimester.

Goobie, thinks for sharing the info so new mommies can feel confident!

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

I am not lactating but I notice that I've been getting white heads on my nipples and areolas so perhaps I'm getting close

Re: When did you start lactating in your first pregnancy?

poems those whiteheads could actually be little balls of dried colostrum in your milk pores.   smile
