Topic: Worrying about Listeria

So last night I ate an Arby's roast beef sandwich.  When I had almost eaten the whole thing I thought oh crap does this count as lunch meat.  I have not eaten a single lunch meat sandwich this whole pregnancy. Cold or hot. I'm almost 35 weeks so now I am in the high danger zone for listeria.  This seriously has me really worried.  I've tried to reason with myself about how it was hot and probably fine, but I'm just mad that I ate it.  Am I being stupid?

Re: Worrying about Listeria

arby's meat is cooked - so it is ok

Re: Worrying about Listeria

Lunch meats are just fine as long as they are steamed to a specific temperature, which Arby's are.  You and babe are fine smile

Re: Worrying about Listeria

Thanks for the reassurance.  As you can probably tell Goobie I never went back on the celexa.  Just a disaster at this point.  Told DH he can just bring me pill as soon as she comes out.

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I was surprised when I was on hospital bed rest that we were allowed to order sandwiches for lunch, dinner and late night snacks. I think that even though we are warned not to eat it...it's not a huge deal if you do

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I have been eating sandwiches, both cold and hot, all through my pregnancy.  No doctor has ever mentioned anything about what I can or can't eat during pregnancy.  I think we err on the side of caution a bit.

Re: Worrying about Listeria

My ob told me the same thing very early in my pregnancy, just to make sure to microwave it until it's steaming, so im sure a hot sandwich is fine, she also said if I had already eaten cold lunchmeat it wasn't a bid deal. The other day a friend brought me a turkey club cause she didn't know, I just took the meat off and ran it through the microwave before I ate it smile

Re: Worrying about Listeria

Aww, I'm sorry you're having a rough go sad

I also eat what I want, and not worry as much as I had in the past, my midwife has never once commented on my lunch meat usage, even though I told her I went through a boloney stage!

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I'm glad you found some reassurance here.

I avoided deli meat through most of my pregnancy, except one day that I had to work late and they provided boxed lunches from a local deli. I had no time and no choice, I was starving and had to eat.

In the last two weeks of my pregnancy, I was on hospital bedrest and ate a turkey sandwich every night at 10:00 pm! The nurses didn't say a thing and actually offered them to me because I needed the calories.

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I didn't know other food,s aside from deli meat and soft cheeses, had the same Listeria risks until I was halfway thru my third trimester! And I had my fair share of soft serve ice cream during my pregnancy (almost daily for several weeks). Lunchmeat (unless it's been steamed), soft serve ice cream, sushi (unless cooked), soft cheeses (unless served cooked/hot), leftovers that have been refrigerated more than 1 day, raw vegetable garnishes, and unwashed/improperly washed produce all have risk of listeria. As long as you aren't eating leftover brie and ham sandwiches on a daily basis, I think you're doing a pretty good job.   smile

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I think you're fine!  I was careful with lunch meats and buffets but the occasional lapse should not cause any panic.  And like others said, Arby's food is cooked.  Kinda.  LOL!   big_smile

Re: Worrying about Listeria

I'm trying to not worry about it anymore, but I now know way more about food safety than I ever wanted to thanks to google.  That'll scare you.  Just educated my dad on listeria.  He said he'd never heard of that.  I told him the high risk groups, and he said well I'm old people and I eat sandwiches all the time.  He got all worried.  Was funny.  Worry runs in the family.
