Topic: Stripping membranes

Anyone had their membranes stripped? How far along were you & did it lead to labor starting naturally? Or did you need additional interventions to get things going? Thanks!

Re: Stripping membranes

I ha it done at 41 weeks and delivered 3 days later. I have no idea if that had anything to do with it though. It is uncomfortable for sure and I wouldn't do it (or interferes in any way) if I had it to do over again.

Re: Stripping membranes

I had it done 3 times in the 11 days I went over due. I think the first at 40 weeks & then like 41 & some other time in there. It hurt & I hated it! It never seemed to start anything. I doubt I'll do it again.

Re: Stripping membranes

I had mine stripped at exactly 40 weeks.  The very early stages of labor started the next day and then I went into full blown labor the day after.  I think it probably helped but at that point I was already 3 cm and 90% effaced so things were definitely already happening,

Re: Stripping membranes

i had mine stripped at 39 weeks and 2 days at only 1-1/2 cm dilated, and i went into labor in the wee hours of the morning at 39 weeks 5 days.  for me things worked out pretty well, but what jdiana said was true.  my water broke but my body wasn't going into strong enough contractions and i was group b strep positive, so they started pitocin to get things moving, which sent me quickly into intense contractions, which had me desperate for relief, which made me demand an epidural (even though i wanted to go naturally).  once i had the epidural, i was golden and didn't really mind having it (i don't regret it), but if you're really, really wanting things to go natural and that's important to you, i would wait it out.  you've got time.

Re: Stripping membranes

With Boog I had my membranes stripped multiple times in the 18 days he was late... didn't do anything.

With Tiny the midwife just checked me, and played with my cervix a bit to see if it was stretchy yet at all (still closed and long) and she was born 11 hours later (10 days early)

Re: Stripping membranes

My sister had hers stripped and had both her kids less then 24hrs later. I believe she was 38wks both times.

Re: Stripping membranes

DP and I both had our membranes stripped at our final OB appointment. To us, that was our last stitch effort to avoid an induction. I delivered within 48 hours of having mine stripped. I agreed to a small amount of pitocin towards the end of labor because my water broke at home the day before so I knew the clock was ticking. DP actually had hers stripped twice (our dr. let us schedule another office visit at our request, however, I think DP was already in the early stages of labor when we arrived for our appointment), and delivered about 24 hours afterward. She progressed perfectly without any pitocin.
