Topic: Breast tenderness

Advice please! The last few days I've had nipple sensitivity, but since probably 7dpo it's been stretching, swelling, tenderness, soreness, itching, and growing growing growing. Holy cow, they're massive. Prepregnancy I have back pain and a degenerative disc issue that Im just starting to wonder if it's related to the huge weight on my chest. I'm wearing a bra all the time now, when I roll over at night it's like two huge bags of rocks swinging around and hauling me down by their weight.
I was a DD to begin with, is there anything that will help?

Re: Breast tenderness

Cabbage leaves are supposed to help with engorgement....maybe that would help you now? Worth a shot.  You just stuff the leaves in your bra.  Also the Medela nipple cream is very soothing.  That might help too.  Also time! Things will most likely mellow out once your past your first few weeks.  My guess is this means you will not have trouble nursing! :-)

Re: Breast tenderness

In the beginning of my pregnancy my breasts seemed to swell and grow, then subside and reduce.  The subsiding coincided as my need to urinate every 45 minutes picked up.  (Ok I'm exaggerating about how often I use the bathroom, but not by much.)

Wearing a man's tank top undershirt that was tight in the bust provided me the support I needed at night.  Soaking both breasts and my back in a warm bath has been more than helpful to relieve pain and soreness.

It sounds like you're in a bra 24/7. If the discomfort continues, I encourage you to check out being fitted for new bras.  Buying a loose comfortable sports bra for evenings at home and sleep might be helpful too.

Good luck to you.  I started my pregnancy wearing a comfortable G cup and am now in a J with the same band size.  Please let me know if you find a magic answer to keep the girl's growth in check.  I could use it.

Re: Breast tenderness

I remember my boobs feeling like that after I had my breast augmentation, the only thing that helped me was bags of crushed ice off and on, also sleeping upright and wearing a good sports bra that was a front fasten...so it was easy it get on and take off. I remember my bones actually hurting as well, if that is part of your pain, I am so sorry, try the ice and maybe sleeping in a recliner for a few nights.   sad
Good luck Hun, I am sorry your chest hurts!
P.S. You may want to google it and find out if you need ice or heat on your chest, since I had surgery, mine was ice...so I am not for sure what it would be for pregnancy chest pain.

Re: Breast tenderness

Thanks everyone! I just took a nice hot shower and soaked them for a few minutes each, which seems to have reduced some of the soreness for now.
Interesting comment about nursing not being a potential issue, I did induce lactation for E, so I wonder if that has something to do with it? They did increase in size at that point and didnt go down after I was done nursing... Hmmmm, curious..

Re: Breast tenderness

I was a DD when I got pregnant with Kate. I think I've blocked out the ridiculous size I was when my milk came in. I would definitely suggest a fitting and spending some serious time researching and money investing in whatever you find that makes you the most comfortable. Look for nursing bras because chances are good that you will be this size at some point in your nursing journey. Some of us are just cursed- I mean blessed sad

Good news is 5 years later I have just gotten back down to a DD.

Re: Breast tenderness

I had some tenderness and swelling from weeks 5-10, but it got better after that.  I went to Motherhood Maternity and got fitted for new bras, bought all non-underwire (previously I was all about under wire), and got a sleep/leisure bra there that I've been wearing to sleep in/lounge around in.  That helped a lot!

Re: Breast tenderness

while i don't remember having really bad booby soreness during either pregnancy, i do agree with what jayjay said about time.  the first trimester is the hardest, i promise you.  your body is doing all kinds of crazy things, and boy, do you feel it!  *hugs*

Re: Breast tenderness

A properly fitted bra will be a lifesaver.  I'm an I cup (yeah, yikes) and I totally get the "bag of rocks weighing you down" thing.  A good fitting, proper, supportive bra will be amazing on not only neck and back pain, but will also help with the tenderness that comes with the rapid growth.  Hormonal tenderness, well that should pass as you get closer to your second tri, sadly you just need to wait that part out.

And not to be a party pooper, but how much your boobies grow doesn't have much to do with whether or not you'll be able to breastfeed.  But as you already induced lactation, you know you'll be able to smile

Oh yes, I would say so! They say after you have had (or in your case, nursed) one baby with subsequent pregnancies your body clicks into place much sooner.  You'll probably start leaking long before little one is ready to be born so I would buy nursing pads soon if you don't have left overs from last time :-)

Re: Breast tenderness

Evening primrose oil helped me with tenderness while nursing. After my cycle started back up I had two weeks (thank you progesterone) where my boobs got reaaally sore then they'd be fine for two weeks. After I started taking EPO I almost couldn't tell the difference between the first and second half of my cycle. I'm willing to bet it would help during the first trimester too.
