I have done 3 cycles of IUI at home with a midwife. My advise to you is to get your vials from the bank a couple days before your LH surge because 1. UPS shows up late and 2. you might have a surge early.
This was the first cycle we did two vials so I am hoping this is it. As you can see in my signature below, we did an insemination 12 hrs after opk and 28 hrs after opk.
I've read that it can take up to 3 to 6 times of IUI before a pregnancy. I think that has a lot to do with trial and error and mind set.
The IUI hurts real bad for me. I've read that there are women that don't feel a thing. I however have nerve endings EVERYWHERE. My midwife said that I am more prepared than most for the pain of childbirth then. Ha.
The process: I lay down on the bed with my legs frog legged. She slides the speculum in and angles it some to find my cervix. There can be a pressure from the speculum expanding. My midwife will put the catheter into my cervix, I will begin to cramp real bad, she instructs me to tell her when the cramping passes, i do, she inseminates, then waits to make sure nothing comes out, and then she gently takes everything out. And we're done! I wiggle to the back of the bed and get under the covers. I have light cramping and maybe a little spotting but all of that is normal. She tells me to not get up out of bed for at least 20 minutes and to stay warm under the covers.
Let me know if you want to talk more about it. I'm here...waiting..for two weeks.
